  The Home
review by Bobby Blakey

In 2013 director James DeMonaco introduced us to the Purge that has gone on to a full-on franchise with him directing three of the films and involved with writing all of them including the TV series. Now he is shifting his focus to a new horror film with The Home starring Pete Davidson, John Glover, and Bruce Altman. Could this film bring something worth taking care of or is it a home not worth living in?

The Home follows a rebellious twentysomething is sentenced to community service at a quiet retirement home. The residents on the fourth floor are strictly off-limits, said to require “special care.” As his suspicions grow and he digs deeper, he uncovers a chilling secret that puts both the residents’ lives and his own in grave danger.

Films like these are always hit and miss. I dig Pete Davidson and was looking forward to seeing him in something different. This film is one that is a mixed back of insanity, mysterious and imbalance as it takes you on a crazy journey. It offers a simple set up to get things going and understanding who Davidson’s character is and why he is thrust into this. It’s a little slow initially by design, but once it gets into the meat of it, I found myself sucked into the strangeness of it all.

The story quickly starts to unravel with numerous crazy and sometimes creepy moments keeping you guessing to what is going on. A lot of it is average and plays up on the jump scares and creepy old people but still brings enough meat to the visuals to make you want to know where it is all headed. The biggest reason it works as all is Davidson himself. He goes all in and does a great job with the role, bringing depth, concern, confusion and every other emotion you can think of to the role. His final moments of the film are the best and looks like he is having a blast filming it.

It's not breaking down the walls of horror but still manages to do something to keep you engaged and waiting for the next crazy moment to happen. It goes all in with some of the blood with a specific moment involving a needle in an eye that is pretty graphic and cringeworthy but perfect for what it brings to the table.
