The Pickup
review by Bobby Blakey

Director Tim Story has a wide variety of films in his archive infusing comedy into numerous genres together including Ride Along 1 & 2 with action and The Blackening with horror. Now he is teaming up with comedy icon Eddie Murphy for the film The Pickup co-starring Pete Davidson, Eva Longoria, Ismael Cruz Cordova, Jack Kesy, Andrew Dice Clay, Marshawn Lynch, Joe “Roman Reigns” Anoa’i and Keke Palmer. Could this film bring the action and fun or will it fail to make the pickup?
The Pickup follows a routine cash pickup that takes a wild turn when two mismatched armored truck drivers, Russell and Travis, are ambushed by ruthless criminals led by a savvy mastermind, Zoe, with plans that go way beyond the cash cargo. As chaos unfolds around them, the unlikely duo must navigate high-risk danger, clashing personalities, and one very bad day that keeps getting worse.
I think Tim Story has found a great formula for the buddy action comedy that we just don’t get enough of these days. Eddie Murphey is the perfect addition to this type of film, being a master of them with hits like Beverly Hills Cop and 48 Hrs. I am always hesitant to get overly excited with these streaming films featuring big stars, but they are getting better, and this is a perfect example.
The film isn’t breaking new ground in the genre, but it hits all the right notes and is a lot of fun. Murphy and Davidson work great together as complete opposites and a dysfunctional relationship. The rest of the cast are good here as well with a nice treat to see Andrew Dice Clay perfectly cast and yelling at everyone.
It’s a by the number’s comedy at times, but it doesn’t need to be anything but that for this to work. It leans into it in a great way and knows exactly the type of
movie it is and delivers. It is filled with plenty of fun action and laughs. Sure, the story is a bit unbelievable at times, but its part for the course on these types of films a lot of times. Not all the jokes hit, but the action more than makes up for it.
This isn’t anything really new, but it is a fun time that is perfect for streaming and worth watching. Decide for yourself and check out The Pickup streaming now on Prime Video.
