The Wrecking Crew
review by Bobby Blakey

In 2021 Jason Momoa faced off against Dave Bautista in the second season of the AppleTV+ series SEE giving fans the ultimate rivalry. Now they two are reteaming for the new action film The Wrecking Crew co-starring Jacob Batalon, Temuera Morrison, Morena Baccarin, Maia Kealoha and Stephen Root from Blue Beetle director Angel Manuel Soto. Could this team up bring the laughs an action or will it get lost on the island?

The Wrecking Crew follows estranged half-brothers Jonny and James who reunite after their father's mysterious death. As they search for the truth, buried secrets reveal a conspiracy threatening to tear their family apart.
After seeing Bautista and Momoa together in SEE you could literally see the chemistry and possibilities with these two guys. Both are big hulking men known for their action, but also both bring layers of emotions and humor to make for plenty of options to where they could go. When I heard they were re-teaming for an action film like this I couldn’t have been more excited and it was everything I expected in the best way possible.
The film isn’t breaking down any walls in the buddy action genre but instead goes all in and just brings the fun and action to much success. The action here is well done and plentiful with the only issue being a few CGI moments, but even then, it is fine. They bring tons of high-octane action filled with gun fights, car chases and plenty of hand-to-hand combat including a great scene of Momoa and Bautista kicking each other’s asses.
I had a blast with it all, but it all hinges on these two powerhouses and they are great here. They look to be having a great time together and it shines through in
their performances. Their dysfunctional relationship is heartbreaking and funny, bringing enough emotional layers to make it something more than just two guys waiting to bring action but not deep enough to bog down the film’s vibe. I loved that they kept it moving at a brisk pace and let their relationship build, break and repeat throughout the film as opposed to just bringing them together quickly like a lot of these films do.
The supporting cast are all good as well, but it is their film all the way. It knows what it is and it brings the pain and fun as expected in every way possible to much success. There is more here to build on should they decide to go back to this well with these characters and I would be front of the line to be there to see it. If not, we at least get the joy of watching the chaotic action and family drama here and now like only they can.
