Hell comes town on 4K with the western classic Tombstone

We just don’t get enough great westerns anymore, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty out there to revisit. One of those classics and one of my favorites, the 1993 film Tombstone is making its way onto 4K for the first time as it rightfully deserves. The film features an impressive cast including Kurt Russell, Sam Elliott and the late Val Kilmer and Bill Paxton from Rambo: First Blood Part II and Cobra director George P. Cosmatos. Could this film continue to live up to its classic status or will it be a shoot-out not worth revisiting?
Tombstone follows U.S. Marshall Wyatt Earp, his brothers and the outrageous Doc Holliday who band together to bring law to the lawless in a notorious showdown at the O.K. Corral. This film would have likely still been great with the leads it had, but it brought the talent to round it all out including Powers Boothe, Dana Delany, Jason Priestley, Michael Biehn, Billy Bob Thornton, Stephen Lang, Thomas Haden Church, Michael Rooker, Billy Zane and Charlton Heston.
I have loved this movie since seeing it the theaters in 93. Every time I revisit it, I am marveled to how well it all not only holds up but delivers on every level.
Sure, there are some historical liberties taken, but that is par for the course to most movies. The film perfectly balances the violence, friendship, brotherhood and romance while telling this historical story all wrapped into the events that led to the O.K. Corral and beyond. From the opening sequence to the final dance the film is a masterpiece in the western genre.
The cast are all on their A game, but its Val Kilmer that steals the show followed closely behind by the underrated Micheal Biehn. Kilmer brings so much depth to the character that despite being on the verge of death still has a swagger about him and his delivery is iconic. It still to this day is one of the biggest missteps of the Oscars for not nominating him for anything. Biehn brings that insane charisma to Johnny Ringo and makes of a bad guy you love to hate vibe that oozes cool off the screen. When they face off it is not only one of the best scenes but made better by their verbal banter.
I love this movie, and it comes as no surprise it still holds up on every level. This new 4K transfer looks beautiful and further enhances the perfect tone of the film, giving it an even bigger cinematic feel at home that it richly deserves. In addition to the film this release offers bonus content both old and new including trailers, TV spots, original storyboards, making of featurettes and more.
