You’re Cordially Invited review by Bobby Blakey

Director Nicholas Stoller has a great history with comedy taking on films like Bros, Neighbors, Night School and so many more. More recently he has been heading up the excellent new Goosebumps Disney+ series but still made time for a new comedy with the film You’re Cordially Invited starring Will Ferrell, Reese Witherspoon, Geraldine Viswanthan, Meredith Hagner, Jimmy Tatro, and Jack McBrayer. Could this wedding venue bring the laughs, or will it fail to share its vows?
You’re Cordially Invited follows two weddings that are accidentally booked on the same day at the same venue and each bridal party challenged with preserving their family’s special moment while making the most of the unanticipated tight quarters. In a hilarious battle of determination and grit, the father of the bride and sister of the other bride chaotically go head-to-head as they stop at nothing to uphold an unforgettable celebration for their loved ones.
We all know that Ferrell has a strong career in comedy and that Witherspoon has delivered some successful comedies as well, but how well do they work together? I am not a big fan of Witherspoon, but I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by how much fun I had with this film. It’s not breaking down any barriers int eh comedy genre but manages to offer up a film with plenty of stupidity, heart and laughs to work thanks to the leads and a strong supporting cast.
Ferrell and Witherspoon have great chemistry as both rivals and friends, and it shines through here. It takes a by the numbers story and levels it up a bit. While they are great it’s the supporting cast that had me in stitches most of the time. Everyone brought something fun and ridiculous to the table with my favorite being the always hilarious Keyla Monterroso Mejia. Every moment on screen
with her is laugh out loud funny and over the top silly. I was hoping to get more than some small cameos from the always funny Fortune Feimster, but alas she was not there enough, but still fun to see.
Every time the film gets a bit to serious it goes over the top to keep the silliness coming and I had a good time with it. It not only wraps things up in a way that feels complete and proper but also lends itself to a whole other level of insanity that I hope we get if a sequel happens. Whether it happens or not it’s a worthwhile comedy for fans of any of the cast or just those looking for a fun time.
