Bitten: The  Final Season

                      review by Drusilla Blakey

Despite the popularity of the supernatural in TV and movies these days there is one iconic creature that they still struggle to get right, the werewolf. When SyFy debuted the Canadian TV series Bitten based on the ‘Women of the Otherworld’ novels by New York Times best-selling author Kelley Armstrong, it finally did some justice to the character. Although fans may have been disappointed with the series ending they can now relieve the entire series with the final chapter Bitten: The Complete Third and Final Season on DVD.

Bitten stars Laura Vandervoort (“Smallville”, “V”, “Haven”) as Elena Michaels, the world’s only female werewolf.  For three seasons we have seen her evolve from a quiet photographer hiding who she really is, to a ferocious leader within the Stonehaven pack. Season three picks up approximately three months after the harrowing battle in the season two finale.  The Stonehaven Pack is on the hunt for the Russian Alpha seeking to end a decades-old vendetta.  Having suffered terrible loses, they are now adding mutts to their pack to increase their numbers.  Also at the end of season two, we were left with a premonition of Elena covered in blood and Stonehaven going up in flames.  Leaving us with the question, “Is Elena going to be the destruction of the pack?”

This season is a great wrap up to a really good show and should not be missed!  I really enjoyed seeing more emotion from all our characters.  Elena has always had to deal with so much, but now we also see the rest of the guys struggling with a lot of uncertainty, questions of trust, and we also see each individual trying to figure out their own personal identities within a social structure that doesn’t really allow for that.  I absolutely loved seeing more ‘acting’ from each person in the show.

Another thing I enjoyed this season were the action packed episodes with great fight scenes!  We are given good and imaginative kills and of course lots of blood, guts and werewolves! (Don’t worry, the witches are back as well) I believe fans of the show will appreciate seeing some good character development, but depending on who your favorite character is, you may not be happy with the way things pan out in the end or with who is left standing.  However, the best thing is finally discover the mystery of how Elena is the only female werewolf in the world!

The three-disc collector’s set includes all 10 unedited episodes, deleted scenes, extended scenes and “A Look at the Final Season” featurette so pick up your copy of “Bitten: The Final Season” when it hits DVD on July 19th from Entertainment One.
