Breakthrough

I love inspirational movies when they are handled right and not overly preachy making it lose the importance of the message. Usually these kinds of great films come in some sort of sports or survival story, but sadly more often than not get thrown to the straight to home entertainment market. The latest Breakthrough starring Chrissy Metz, Josh Lucas, Topher Grace, Mike Colter, Marcel Ruiz, Sam Trammell, and Dennis Haysbert from Director Roxann Dawson. Could this inspirational film capture the miracle of the event or will it fail to wake up from its coma?

Breakthough follows Joyce Smith whose adopted son John falls through an icy Missouri lake, all hope seems lost as John lies lifeless. In the face of every bleak medical case history and dire scientific prediction, Joyce’s unwavering belief inspires her community to pray for John’s recovery. This was one that I admit I was so tired of the trailer before its theatrical release. When I finally got the chance to check it out I tried to keep my mind open because the trailer did offer up a compelling story of faith and tragedy. While this is a good movie it failed to step up much past that and I blame the over saturation of the that dang trailer.

I know at times you have to give a lot away in a trailer to sell the film, but this film offered up nothing more that stood out past that. I was disappointed that there wasn’t some sort of unexpectness or bigger impact to the finished film. Everything you get from the trailer is pretty much the film down to the letter. There is nothing added or unexpected to make it feel like something bigger. The cast do a decent job, but I guess I was expecting to be moved more than I was. Instead I just felt I had already seen the whole movie in the trailer and left it without much more inspiration beyond that.

I am sure there will be some that it connects with and that is really all that is important in the end. If you have not seen the trailer then avoid it and just watch the film as is, but if you have then just decide for yourself. This release not only includes the film, but also bonus content including commentary, gallery, deleted scene, and featurettes taking you behind bringing this movie to life. Witness the miracle with Breakthrough available now on digital, 4K Ultra, Blu-ray and DVD from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment.
