Child’s Play: Collector’s Edition                      review by Bobby Blakey

Shout Factory has really been stepping up their game this year bringing some great iconic horror films to their Scream Factory brand. Now they are stepping it up even more with the announcement of the Child’s Play Collector’s Edition Blu-ray set.

For anyone that was never terrorized by the good guy doll, the film follows serial killer Charles Lee Ray who needed a quick escape from cop Mike Norris, so he took his soul and buried it into a playful, seemingly good guy doll Chucky. Little does he know a little boy by the name of Andy Barclay will be the new owner of him soon-to-come. Charles confides in Andy while he commits numerous murders, but once the adults accept Andy's story as truth, it's too late. Child’s Play is one of those classic horror films that falls in line with the iconic killers of Freddy, Jason and Michael Myers. The almost silly nature made the film standout when it was released, but the well-handled direction and look of Chucky himself made it work. Chucky has become a respected horror character that e test of time and like most spawning numerous sequels. This original still holds up great offering all the fun and violence you remember now in a beautiful hi-def transfer. There is something about these old horror films that hold up more than most films and Chucky is one of the best. Being a doll his presence can be felt all the time in a more real life situation every time you walk down a toy aisle at the store and at the time of its original release there was sure to be some that were watching their back at Toys ’R’ Us.

This awesome new release includes a slew of special features including commentaries, still photo gallery, original theatrical trailer, interviews, numerous featurettes as well as new content including new commentary and a 2K scan of the film itself. As if the film itself and these features weren’t enough of a reason to grab this new release, Shout Factory is offering up a standard and deluxe offer for the film.

With the standard offer you get the collector’s edition with slipcover, it ships earlier and comes with a limited edition 18”x24” poster with new art by Justin Osbourn while supplies last. The deluxe offer includes the same as well as a second custom made slipcover exclusive to this promotion, a second 18”x24” poster with custom made “Good Guys Doll” artwork, and an exclusive limited edition 5.5” tall “Good Guys Chucky” from NECA.
