Deadpool & Wolverine
                 review by Bobby Blakey

In 2016 Ryan Reynolds finally got to reprise his role as the Merc with the Mouth Deadpool in his one feature film after the haphazardly portrayal on Wolverine: Origins. The film, cast and crew knocked it out of the park, so it was no surprise to get Deadpool 2 in 2018. Throughout the franchise and online Reynolds has taken jabs at both Wolverine and Hugh Jackman that has finally culminated into what we all wanted the next chapter of the series being Deadpool & Wolverine. The film co-stars Emma Corrin, Morena Baccarin, Lewis Tan, Rob Delaney, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, and Matthew Macfadyen along with some surprises that were showcased in the trailers, but I won’t spoil it again here.

Deadpool & Wolverine follows a listless Wade Wilson who toils away in civilian life with his days as the morally flexible mercenary, Deadpool, behind him. But when his home world faces an existential threat, Wade must reluctantly suit up again with an even more reluctant Wolverine.

To say the hype for this movie is massive is an understatement. The excitement for this movie has been in full force since the teaser announcement last year and now you can’t go anywhere without seeing something about this film. This also lends to the concern of can it live up to the hype and be more than just another entry into the MCU and the answer is a resounding yes all around.

The film plays to perfection as a buddy flick with two guys who both clearly love each other in real life and characters can’t stand each other on screen. They are a perfect duo and the love they both have for their characters has crafted and event film that not only gives fans everything fans want, but closure on things you didn’t know you needed.

I am going to keep this as spoiler free as possible including those surprises that

have been shown in the trailers as mentioned above because there are so many great things here that everyone should have the chance to experience it. What is amazing about this film is that it is not just a fan favorite superhero team up filled with action, comedy and cameos, but a love letter to the world of the FOX Marvel era and works perfectly to blend what came before into the MCU without trying to change anything in the past.

It keeps the same formula of the previous Deadpool films intact before heading into utter chaos in the best way possible. Both Jackman and Reynolds are perfect in their roles as always, but the comfort with each other and returning to do it together shines through. I was worried about how Jackman would do after having retired from the character, but he looks to be having a great time. The story is simple enough and the TVA that is showcased in the trailer and fans were introduced to via the TV series Loki is the perfect direction to use. It connects perfectly with the final tag in Deadpool 2 and his time jumping to make it blend perfectly.

While this is firmly planted in the DCU now it doesn’t feel like they tried to change anything and instead just fused perfectly into it like it was always there. It will be interesting to see how they use this to do more with the MCU, but for now we can just relish the brilliance of the film we were given. Fans will be hard pressed to contain themselves with the surprises with my personal favorite being a montage with Wolverine early on I never thought I would get to see.

This not only gives us the film we want, but the Wolverine we have waited for and everything else in between. My inner comic fan screamed numerous times with it almost bringing tears to my eyes just in seeing things I never thought I would see on screen like how I felt in Avengers: End Game seeing all the Avengers charging into battel all at once.

I am purposefully not speaking much about what goes on in the film as it should be an experience and it is worth the surprise. There is a great montage behind the scenes history in the credits that serves as a great send off as well as a funny after credit scene just for laughs. Try to avoid anything online until you see if for yourself in theaters now from Marvel Studios.
