Mega Time Squad            review by Bobby Blakey

I love bizarre and cheesy movies. More often than not the titles alone will bring me in from being so far out there. The latest, Mega Time Squad doesn’t have an overly strange title, but the look of it all had me all in. Could this be one of those hidden gems that delivers the goods or will it fail to make the jump in time it needs?

Mega Time Squad follows a low-level criminal who steals an ancient Chinese time-travel device, but he may not survive the demonic consequences of tampering with time. This wacky flick comes from the FX creator from Deathgasm Tim van Dammen. I knew nothing about this film going in and was a bit hesitant hoping it didn’t disappoint and thankfully it delivered exactly what I wanted. The story is actually less over the top than I had expected, but it does offer up plenty of craziness throughout. It knows what kind of movie it is and never takes itself overly seriously while still keeping it grounded to not become dumb.

Anytime a film deals with time travel there is a thin line of it working, but here it looked as though they took their time to try and make it all work. There are numerous overlapping sequences that make them make more sense and more entertaining. The more they do it the better the film gets as it gets to more insane levels. Outside of the usual time travel issues, they bring in some fun elements of it effecting relationships and other elements of this guy’s life allowing it to be a multi-layered story without feeling too cluttered.

In the end this is far from a perfect movie, but it offers up laughs, a good story and has cult favorite written all over it. There are some great running gags and handle the time travel issues pretty well making it one of the better of the genre in my opinion.
