   Ocean's 8

When the remake of Ocean’s 11 hit theaters in 2001 who would have thought this star studded feature would spawn a franchise, but that is exactly what it did. With Ocean’s Twelve (2004) and Ocean’s 13 (2007) it seemed like it had run its course and was done, but now it has changed direction with the latest entry Ocean’s 8 featuring a female led cast including Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson and Awkwafina.

Ocean’s 8 follows Danny Ocean's estranged sister Debbie who attempts to pull off the heist of the century at New York City's star-studded annual Met Gala. Her first stop is to assemble the perfect crew: Lou, Rose, Daphne Kluger, Nine Ball, Tammy, Amita, and Constance. I know that the world is now on this “woman empowerment”, “we need more women in movies” kick, but honestly this never even crossed my mind as I watched this film.  So PLEASE don’t let the female cast stop you from going to see this.  And on the flip side, don’t ONLY go to see this movie for that reason.  This is a good, solid story that stands on its own.  If there had been a few men in the mix, it still would have worked, but I think the point was to show how Debbie Ocean is the same as Danny Ocean and how they can ingeniously plan these amazing heists.

I feel that I must preface my following statement by saying that I adore Sandra Bullock….but, I thought she did a great job in this film! It’s not overly emotional or hard hitting like some of her other performances and okay, maybe someone else could have pulled it off.  But I honestly believed her as the sister of Danny Ocean.  I felt it.

Everyone else in the cast did a good job as well.   I do feel that every time I see Mindy Kaling, I wish she had done more and I’m left wanting more.  She is cute and fun in this film, and I wish we had been given more time to explore her character.  Also, Helena Bonham Carter is as odd as ever and I loved it!  Her facial expressions always get me.

As I mentioned before, the story is smart.  Just as in the other Ocean's movies, you do have to pay attention.  And, it's actually a lot of fun to see if the plan is going to go off as they think it will.  I was excited and on the edge of my seat waiting to see I they were going to get caught.

If you are a fan of the other movies, or if there is just a lady in this cast that you like, I would encourage you to check this movie out! In addition to the film this release features bonus content including deleted scenes and featurettes that take you behind bringing this film to the big screen. Join in on the crime with Oceans 8 available now on Digital HD, 4K Ultra, Blu-ray and DVD from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.
