Andy Samberg has established himself as a comedy genius with some of the best bits on SNL over the last few years, most notably his music videos with The Lonley Island team including Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer. In 2016 they teamed up the feature film Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping co-starring Sarah Silverman, Tim Meadows, Maya Rudolph, Joan Cusack, Imogen Poots, and Chris Redd. Now Shout Factory is rereleasing the comedy in an all-new Limited Edition Steelbook.

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping follows pop/rap superstar Conner4Real who goes into a major tailspin and watches his celebrity high life begin to collapse when his new album fails to sell records. He'll try anything to bounce back, anything except reuniting with his old rap group The Style Boyz. This is one of those comedies that offers up some great moments that not only mock the music industry, but also manages to be so out there at times that it might not work for everyone. There are some slow moments here and there, but as a whole Samberg and his crew deliver the laughs and music like only they can.

 

The entire cast all do a great job with their characters as well as the cameos who step into to talk about how amazing their ridiculous music is. Not since Russell Brand’s Infant Sorrow soundtrack from Get Him To The Greek has there been a collection of songs that deliver the laughs and double as great music like in this film. Each song is more ridiculous than the next, but you can’t help but bounce to the beat and find yourself loving it which is both good and bad. Being this silly should make it more laughable that they are so popular, but on the flip side you can totally see why.

There is no denying that this movie is dumb, but anyone going into this and not realizing this shouldn’t be there in the first place. The film is very much in the vein of things like CB4 that brings the real world and the mock music career together to perfection. If you are a fan of the Lonely Island, anyone in this film or just fun music in general then give Popstar a chance in all its fun raunchy glory.
