Project Wolf Hunting review by Bobby Blakey
Well Go USA continues to bring the best of Asian cinema with no sign of slowing down across all genres. The latest Project Wolf Hunting looks to be one of the more violent films they have delivered in some time and stars Seo In-guk, Jang Dong-yoon, Choi Guy-hwa, Sung Dong-il, Park Ho-san and Jung So-min from director Kim Hong-Sun. Could this flick bring the pain it promises or will it not be a hunt worth going on?
Project Wolf Hunting follows dangerous convicts aboard a cargo ship who unite in a coordinated escape attempt that soon escalates into a bloody, all-out riot while under heavily armed guard. But as the fugitives continue their brutal campaign of terror, they soon discover that not even the most vicious among them is safe from the horror they unknowingly unleashed from the darkness below deck.
Heading into this film I had seen the trailer so knew it was going to action heavy, but I was not prepared for the horror level of gore brought along with it. Make no mistake I loved every minute of it, just didn’t expect it to go that deep into the blood flow. The story reminded me of a mash-up of Universal Solider meets The Terminator meets Silent Rage all wrapped in a blood soaked action spectacle.
The film has a bit of a slow start trying to get everyone on board the vessel as it prepares us with what we think is coming, but once it begins it takes on a new life of its own. What starts out as a typical prison riot style flick turns into insane chaos and violence as a new addition joins in on the fun. As the violence is being unleashed a deeper element to the simple story begins to unfold making for an even more entertaining flick with unlimited possibilities and some great deaths.
I headed into this film having no doubt I was going to enjoy it, but came out the other side loving the blood soaked mayhem of it all that just adds more and more gallons of blood as it moves along. I would not be surprised to hear that this might be one of the bloodiest films of the year once it is all said and done. You will cheer, cringe and might even gag at the visuals of violence, but that just adds to the fun of it all.
This film is pure unstoppable action from beginning to end with an ending that is not only satisfying, but also sets up the possibility of a sequel that I hope we get. If not this film serves as enough to entertain the hardcore action and gore hound fans.
