Slasher : Season One

                         by Bobby Blakey

Shout Factory keeps churning out the horror hits with their Scream Factory brand, but not all of them are just classic horror films. They have also been releasing complete TV series like the werewolf drama Hemlock Grove and now the Chiller series Slasher: Season One.

Slasher follows a young woman, Sara, who is confronted with a series of horrifying copycat murders, that are based on the widely-known killings of her parents years ago. This is yet another anthology series that looks to change up the tone with each season, but only time will tell if it moves forward. This first season has a vibe much like the original Scream film and works to create the mystery of a thriller along with gore of a full on slasher film. The story kicks off with a pretty great sequence and then slows a bit down allowing it to tell its tale without ever feeling to rushed. The series is only eight episodes long with makes it feel like an extended film instead of an actual series with a great payoff at the end. The gore hounds will no doubt love it as it doesn’t hold back with letting the blood flow freely. There are some great kills here that rival any full on slasher film.

The story is pretty well layered filled with a slew of characters that could be behind the mask and even those that are cleared are quickly showcased to have their own dark secrets. There are some really messed up things going on in this cast of characters in this town and in turn it keeps turning things in a twisted mess of insanity in the best way possible. Fans of the genre will like to see the darkness and blood that occupies this small town that is perfectly blended together with a story that will keep you intrigued and guessing until the very end of the season.

The final moments of this season let you know that the story isn’t over even if the current cast may not be involved and offers up a great final moments that will have fans smiling with that wicked intent that makes it all worth it. In addition to all 8 episodes of the season this release also includes a behind the scenes featurette that takes you deeper behind the dangers of this mystery. Return to the scene of the crime when Slasher Season one comes to Blu-ray and DVD on July 12th from Shout Factory.
