Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny                        review by Bobby Blakey

Most know Jack Black from his massive film career with films like School of Rock, Tropic Thunder and the Jumani series. Before all of that he was part of the iconic duo Tenacious D alongside Kyle Gass that they formed in 1994. All the while they both have worked on other things separately; they have always come back together for albums and shows. In 2006 the boys teamed up for their first feature film Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny co-starring Fred Armisen, Amy Poehler, Dave Grohl and Ronnie James Dio. Now Shout Factory is bringing the cult hit to Blu-ray for the first time ever.

Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny follows a fateful day in Venice Beach where JB and KG meet and realize they are destined to make history by combining their musical genius. But when overnight success eludes them, they set out to find the legendary "Pick of Destiny" - a special guitar pick believed to possess magical powers that can make any open mic wannabe a rock legend.

This film is essentially the story behind and leading up to their son “Tribute” that is about them writing the greatest song in the world and taking on the Devil himself. While not the hit they hoped for when it was released, the film

has found cult status and is loved by true fans. I was late to the Tenacious D party when this came out and didn’t know much about the music but was a Black fan and loved this film. Even without knowing their music the film delivers ridiculous laughs and great music throughout and never understood it not being a bigger success.

The entire film floats on the shoulders of these two guys and they are perfect. I know Black is the superstar of the group, but Glass holds his own throughout and it appears Black truly tried to not only make it an even star vehicle, but also let Glass take a lot of the lead. This just speaks to both their friendship and power as a duo. Both are so entertaining here it is baffling how anyone could not get sucked into the fun of it all.

The story is silly, but perfectly crafted to bring this epic story to life filled with laughs, passion, rock and Satan as anyone could ever want. This new release looks outstanding in its new 2K remaster, and the laughs hold up perfectly. I still love this movie and hope that this new release gets it out there to even more fans old and new as it always deserved.

In addition to the film this release offers up bonus content including commentary, trailer, music video, deleted/extended scenes, featurettes and so much more. Join the journey to rock god with Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny available now on Blu-ray for the first time ever from Shout! Studios.
